Places to Visit

• Sto. Niño Shrine – the shrine is dedicated to the Holy Child Jesus, also known as the Santo Niño. It serves as a museum and a cultural center that showcases the rich history and heritage of the region. The Sto. Niño Shrine was built in the 1980s as a presidential rest house during the administration of the late President Ferdinand Marcos and his wife, Imelda Marcos, who hailed from Leyte. The architecture of the shrine is inspired by Spanish colonial design, featuring grand staircases, antique furniture, and ornate decorations.
• MacArthur Park – a significant historical site located in Palo, Leyte, Philippines. The park commemorates the landing of General Douglas MacArthur, an American general, and his allied forces on October 20, 1944, during World War II. The landing marked the beginning of the liberation of the Philippines from Japanese occupation.
• San Juanico Bridge – a famous landmark and a key infrastructure in the Philippines, connecting the islands of Samar and Leyte. It spans the San Juanico Strait, which separates the two islands. The bridge has a length of approximately 2.16 kilometers (1.34 miles)
• MV EVA Jocelyn Yolanda Marker – a marker to the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda (also known as Typhoon Haiyan), which struck the Philippines in November 2013. Typhoon Yolanda was one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded, causing widespread devastation, particularly in the Visayas region, including Leyte. It resulted in the loss of thousands of lives, massive destruction of infrastructure, and displacement of communities.
• Sto. Niño Church – one of the oldest and most significant religious structures in the region. The architectural style of Sto. Niño Church is predominantly Romanesque, characterized by its solid and sturdy appearance. The facade features a prominent entrance with arched doorways and windows. The bell tower stands on the right side of the church and is adorned with decorative elements. Inside the church, visitors can appreciate the spacious nave with its high ceilings and ornate decorations. The main altar is dedicated to the Santo Niño (Holy Child Jesus) and is a focal point for devotion and worship. The church also houses several side altars dedicated to different saints.
• Tacloban City Hall – located in the downtown area of Tacloban. The building is easily recognizable by its distinctive design, featuring a combination of modern and traditional architectural elements. The City Hall complex comprises several buildings and structures, including the main administration building, where the offices of the mayor, vice mayor, and other administrative departments are located. It also houses the City Council chambers, where local legislation is discussed and enacted.
• Leyte Provincial Capitol – situated on a sprawling complex that houses various government offices and departments responsible for overseeing and managing the affairs of the province. The capitol building itself is an impressive structure that showcases a mix of architectural styles, combining modern and traditional elements.
• Tacloban Astrodome – a notable sports and events venue located in Tacloban City, Leyte, Philippines. It is a multipurpose indoor arena that serves as a venue for various sporting events, concerts, exhibitions, trade fairs, and other large-scale gatherings. The Tacloban City Astrodome has been a significant venue for sports competitions, particularly basketball, which is widely popular in the Philippines. It has hosted numerous basketball tournaments, including collegiate leagues, inter-school competitions, and professional games.
• Pasalubong Center – Tacloban City, being the capital of the province of Leyte in the Philippines, offers a variety of delightful delicacies that are worth trying.
